Champion Vs Champion: Hogan Vs Warrior

Published on 10 June 2024 at 16:05

Today, we look back at one of the most iconic rivalries in wrestling history, one that divided fans and redefined how storylines could captivate audiences worldwide: the epic clash between Hulk Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior.

Introduction to the Epic Rivalry

This was not just any rivalry; it was the collision of champions, face versus face. Hulk Hogan, known for the power of Hulkamania, went head-to-head with The Ultimate Warrior, a formidable force backed by an almost fanatical following. At the time, it was nearly unheard of for two top babyfaces to face off in a WrestleMania main event, but the unprecedented nature of this showdown captivated fans young and old.

The Immortal Hulk Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior

Hulk Hogan was the reigning king of wrestling, the main attraction of the golden era, and the unmistakable face of the WWF. His fame extended far beyond the wrestling ring; even those who didn't follow wrestling knew of Hulk Hogan. In contrast, The Ultimate Warrior was a whirlwind of color and energy, a vibrant character who instantly became a fan favorite with his face paint, wild hair, tassels, and intensity. His background in professional bodybuilding gave him an amazing physique that matched the rock and heavy metal culture popular among wrestling fans at the time. While Hogan dominated the 80s and had a lot of clout over WWF's storylines and daily operations, Vince McMahon saw the rising star and dollar signs in Warrior. Despite his lack of technical wrestling talent, Warrior's charisma and rapport with fans made him a breakout star and a lucrative draw for the business. For the ultimate clash to take place, Hogan's approval was crucial, and it seemed he was on board, potentially viewing this match as a chance to pass the torch to Warrior.

Building Up the Showdown

WWF wasted no time in crafting the storyline. Their paths first crossed at the 1990 Royal Rumble, where a face-off between the two sent fans into a frenzy, signaling the dream match they were mad to see. Hogan later won the Rumble, setting the stage for what was to come. Scheduled as tag team partners on "Saturday Night's Main Event," Hogan and Warrior faced Mr. Perfect and The Genius, Lanny Poffo. An accidental hit from Warrior to Hogan during their victory hinted at brewing tension, raising fan anticipation. Hogan soon challenged Warrior to determine whether Hulkamania or The Power of the Warriors was the superior force in WWF. The onscreen WWF president at the time, Jack Tunney, added spice to the moment by officially announcing the WrestleMania VI main event, with both WWF and Intercontinental Championships on the line. The storyline was further fueled by a rare on-screen contract signing and an array of explosive vignettes and promos, especially from the wild-eyed Warrior.

The WrestleMania VI Main Event

WrestleMania VI finally arrived, with 70,000 fans packing the SkyDome in Toronto on April 1st. The atmosphere was electric, charged with anticipation for a match that, while not expected to be a technical masterpiece, was a spectacle of sheer star power. The match unfolded with headlocks, shoulder barges, clotheslines, various holds, and even tests of strength, igniting the crowd's fervor. A false finish saw Warrior hitting his signature press slam, only for Hogan to kick out at two. Hogan then attempted his patented leg drop, which Warrior dodged, countering with a splash to secure the victory. Hogan's subtle kick-out after the three-count suggested complicity, but it didn't matter; the crowd erupted, and The Ultimate Warrior was crowned as the new poster boy of WWF. In a poignant moment, Hulk Hogan handed the belt to Warrior, embracing him in the ring. This was the first time in years that Hogan had been pinned cleanly, signaling his willingness to do what's best for business.

The Aftermath and Legacy

Following this iconic match, both stars pursued different paths. The Warrior's rise fizzled out, not fulfilling Vince McMahon's long-term vision. However, the storyline's excitement and rare babyface clash left a mark on wrestling history. Even years later, in WCW, Hogan and Warrior's paths would cross again. This rivalry remains a fond memory for many, including wrestlers who watched as fans, like Edge and Christian. Though some argue that the storyline overshadowed the technically limited match, many fans overlook these shortcomings for the epic narrative and satisfying outcome. It stands as one of the top ten WrestleMania main events, embodying the spectacle and drama that make professional wrestling unforgettable.

Reflecting on the Rivalry

Is the Hogan-Warrior rivalry one of the greatest in wrestling, or do you think it's overrated? Despite their technical limitations, both stars left an impact on wrestling history. I'd place it among my top ten WrestleMania main events. What about you?
