Hello everyone,
With the upcoming Clash at the Castle this weekend in Glasgow, it’s shaping up to be an exciting card. Glasgow’s crowd is bound to be in full swing, making their voices heard, and I’m anticipating an action-packed, electric atmosphere that can compete with France’s Backlash earlier this year.
I won't be in attendance myself, because I’m attending my first RCW wrestling event in Cork this weekend. It’s an exciting opportunity, and I’ll report back on how it goes. So, fair play to RCW Wrestling – make sure to check it out if you get the chance.
Revisiting Clash at the Castle 2022
Given the excitement, I thought it would be fitting to revisit Clash at the Castle 2022. Held in Cardiff, Wales, on September 3rd at the Principality Stadium, this was WWE’s first major stadium show in the UK since the epic SummerSlam of 1992. It was long overdue if you ask me. Let’s take a look back at that evening’s card and compare it to this weekend’s upcoming event, examining how some storylines began.
Kickoff Show
As is now customary, the event kicked off with a panel featuring Booker T, Kevin Patrick, Jerry Lawler, and Peter Rosenberg, with Kayla Braxton hosting. They were promoting what was to come later in the evening
Six-Woman Tag Team Match
The first match of the night was a high-energy, fast-paced six-woman tag team encounter with Bianca Belair, Alexa Bliss, and Asuka versus Bayley, Dakota Kai, and Iyo Sky. This match showcased the athleticism and teamwork of both teams. Bayley's team ultimately emerged victorious, with Bayley pinning Bianca Belair. This marked Bayley’s first pinfall win since her return, setting the stage for future developments in the women’s division.
Intercontinental Championship Match
Next up was the Intercontinental Championship match between Gunther and Sheamus. As expected, this was a grueling, hard-hitting encounter that epitomized a classic wrestling match. Gunther emerged victorious, but Sheamus received a standing ovation for his efforts, highlighting the respect he commands from fans across the pond.
SmackDown Women's Championship Match
The SmackDown Women's Championship match featured Liv Morgan defending her title against Shayna Baszler. This bout displayed an interesting clash of styles, with Baszler’s MMA background pitted against Morgan’s agility and resilience. Despite Baszler’s power moves, Morgan retained her title setting the stage for her future storylines. Look where she is today!
Tag Team Match: Edge & Rey Mysterio vs. Judgment Day (Balor and Priest)
Edge and Rey Mysterio teamed up to face Judgment Day’s Finn Balor and Damian Priest. This was a highly anticipated match, blending legendary experience with new-generation vigor. The dynamic was fantastic, with Edge and Mysterio eventually emerging victorious. However, the highlight came with Dominic Mysterio's shocking heel turn, laying out both Edge and his father, Rey, setting off his own dramatic storyline arc. And the rest is history as they say!
Matt Riddle vs. Seth Rollins
The encounter between Matt Riddle and Seth ‘Freakin’ Rollins was intense and personal, given their heated rivalry. Filled with high-flying maneuvers, taunts, and near-falls, Rollins eventually triumphed, cementing his status as a top star in the company. He's quite badly missed at present on screen, and we hope for his return ASAP!
Main Event: Roman Reigns vs. Drew McIntyre
The main event featured Roman Reigns defending his undisputed WWE Universal Championship against Drew McIntyre. The match saw a mix of power moves and tactical wrestling, with interference from the Usos and the debut of Solo Sikoa tipping the scales in Reigns' favor. Despite the outcome being somewhat predictable, the crowd's passion, especially for McIntyre, was palpable.
Post-match, Tyson Fury made a surprise appearance, addressing McIntyre and leading a sing-along to ‘American Pie’—a moment that, while cringey, helped ease any disappointment among the fans.
Looking Forward
Overall, the 2022 event was decent, offering high-quality matches and significant storyline developments, particularly Dominic Mysterio’s turn and Solo Sikoa joining the Bloodline. It serves as a solid foundation for what could unfold this weekend in Glasgow.
Feel free to share your thoughts on the 2022 Clash at the Castle, and let’s hope WWE considers Ireland for a future event.
